Creating

“You are not required to save the world, of anyone for that matter, with your art. It isn’t valuable only if it rescues or raises money or makes an enormous impact. It can be simply for the love of it. That is not frivolous or selfish in the slightest. If the only person it saves is you, that’s enough.”

Jenn Hatmaker

It’s easy to believe that unless we are creating for the purpose of changing the world or reaching thousands of people with our work then we are doing it for nothing.  I’ve believed it.

I hear other artists, who felt fulfilled and secure after creating, believe the lie that because it wasn’t published by a well-known blog it wasn’t that good after all.   I’ve believed that one too.

This year I’ve trying to make room for creating just for the sake of creating.  I’m doing more self-portraits.  I’m working on a personal project telling the story of my battle with depression, based on a poem given to me by an Australian Poet late last year.   And it’s hard.  It’s vulnerable.   Road blocks pop up unexpectedly and they try to break my heart and break my will to keep creating.

But the honest truth is, I need to create in order to purge the story out of the insides of my body.  I think I will implode or disappear or shatter if it doesn’t make it’s way out of my veins and brain and spill out into something beautiful.   The first step was healing.  The next step not so much.  But I anticipate the next step will cover over the one before.

Stopping isn’t an option today.

COMMERCIAL | Doña Elba

Late last year I went on an adventure to Nicaragua.  This was my second time to visit this beautiful country, but my first time to meet Jennifer of Doña Elba Cigars.   She grew up in the tobacco fields with her family, harvesting tobacco.  A well known cigar craftsman found her in the fields when she was a teenager and their love story began.

Together they built a thriving cigar business and a small family.

Five years ago Don Silvio passed away tragically after a routine surgery, leaving her to raise her boys alone, and continue Doña Elba.   Jennifer is brave and lovely and determined to create amazing cigars as a woman in a man’s business.

COMMERCIAL | HAZEL AND HAZE

One of the greatest gifts is working with other artists and creatives.   When Angela of Hazel and Haze Photography contacted me about shooting a showreel for her beautiful wedding photography business, I was incredibly honored.  I admire Angela’s artistic work, her genuine and warm love for those around her, and her commitment to marriage and mothering her little baby girl.  She gives everything 100%.  I wish I had her energy and courage.   The best part is when you hire her to photograph your wedding, you not only receive gorgeous images, you are also gaining a friend.

Her wedding photography business is located in Enid, Ok.  You can find her work here:  http://www.hazelandhazephotography.com

COMMERCIAL | BE CRAFTY

I love, love, love Miss Amanda Rydell of Be Crafty! I mean, in another life I’d like to come back as her. Her amazing style, her crafty creativeness, her warm and kind spirit- all of it. It was a huge honor to partner with her a few months ago at a local Be Crafty Workshop hosted with Ashley Campbell of Under the Sycamore.

The best news is that Amanda and some friends have opened a new shop. The worst news is it’s in Fargo, ND. If you want to follow along on her new adventure, you can see her weekly shop updates on Facebook: thewhitehouseco and Instagram @whitehouse.co I can’t even handle all the cuteness and I seriously don’t know what’s going on with all the folks up north, but how does Amanda find all the vintage velvet pink sofas and chairs at thrift stores and on the side of the road??? It’s too good.
