Easy to Love

Someone told me last week that I was easy to love and I swelled under those words.  I want to be easy to love because of what that means.

And it makes me consider what makes people difficult to love-

withdrawn

not willing to listen

“all about me”

easily angered

unpredictable

unsympathetic

judgmental

lovers of bad news

undependable

I think of those people in my circle who are easy to love and they are joy bringers, life givers.  They love others easily and in turn, they are easy to love, to cherish.  I want to be their neighbors and share my garden and my courtyard and my groceries.

So thank you for the compliment.  I felt loved just hearing those words and have been inspired to love better since.

Pieces of my Heart

Patched together, neatly stitched, some old, some new.  All coming together to make beauty.  Birthed from perfection, planned, ordered specifically to form this life.

But what if some of those patches were flawed to begin with?  Those pieces pulled from the generation before, worn, torn?  What if those pieces have lost their warmth, their loveliness, and have become threadbare?  Must those continue to be a part of my quilted life?  Must I, out of obligation or expectancy, leave these pieces to be carried, used, accepted?

Or, because of the sight and understanding granted by a gracious Designer, might I pull out, pluck from, mend, repair?

Work.  Busy, steady hands and a discerning eye.  A willingness for the needle to prick my finger and sometimes draw blood.  This blood may stain my quilt and when I look back over my work, I will remember and mark the time spent in doing the difficult task.  I might try to hide the blood stain but often it just makes the mark larger and the fabric discolored.  The marker, the remembrance, the glory stolen from that day’s work.   Instead I will leave the tear stains, the spots.

And as I go about the task, I move with knowledge gleaned from the quilters before me, who like me, are removing and mending their imperfections, one square at a time.  And they share their wisdom, their books, their passages of teaching and healing.  They bind my bloodied fingers and help me stitch this life back together when the pain of holding the needle hinders my work.  Lovingly they remind me of the Designer, of the greater design, the beauty still present in the flaws, the small holes, the seams unravelled, the time-worn colors still vibrant in the light.

Because when the cold winds blow through me, the blanket is all I have.  And if I neglected my work, the daily labor of thoughtfully tending my patches with discipline and diligence throughout the warmer, sunlit seasons, my comfort will be taken.  My children will be left to the winter’s chill.  There will be no overflow of warmth to share, no color to brighten the gray and white, no softness to soothe.  Nothing to give.

I add a patch. A small piece from a baby girl’s dress.  Pink, perfect.  A friendship adds a patch.  A prayer stitches, mends from miles away.  A marriage, a birth, an illness, a healing.  Patches.  Stitches.  A mother.  A Father.  Son.  Husband.  A sorrow.  Secrets shared behind sunglasses to hide the tears.  A sister.  A friend.  A soul-talk over coffee.  Patches.  Stitches.  Patches.  Stitches.

I have been redeemed.  Each patch, each stitch, a sign of my sanctification.  Each stain evidence of life lived.

My quilt is beautiful and my hands are fruitful.  My work is not finished and my quilt is ever incomplete.  But it’s redeemed and grace will bind the broken until…  And I walk towards the inevitable Winters to come, prepared, praying my quilted life will bring glory the Creator.

Love Springs

Road trip to Branson, MO with the in-laws with a stop outside of Cassville to look in on the Roaring River and Trout Hatchery.  It was a lovely day; the kind of day I wish came around more often.

I love to watch the kids explore a new area- the way they chase butterflies, climb trees, notice oddly shaped rocks.  They love the outdoors and I love to be with them as their eyes are opened to God’s beautiful creation.

We walked along the river’s edge, watching the fishermen cast and catch, cast and catch.  After being cooped in the car for hours, it felt good to stretch and run.  Although the temperature was oppressive in the sun, when standing at the mouth of the this cavern, the air was cool and crisp.

And it reminded of me love.  Standing in God’s love is so refreshing, a relief from the heat of the world.  The waters of His love are never ending; why would we turn our backs and wander in the wilderness looking for refreshment elsewhere?

This little placard explains that this cavern, this natural spring feeding into the Roaring River, has never been fully explored.  Divers have only been able to go so deep and then they must turn back.  Deep.  Bottomless.  We can only go so far into His presence and receive so much while our feet are planted on this earth.  We won’t find the end.

And there’s enough of His love to go around.  Not one of us can quench the flow.  We can’t be too greedy with His love, His mercy, His attention.  In fact, I hope I will someday be called “co-dependent” on Him.  His love roars over creation, over His people and we can stand in the floodwaters, fearless.  He will not abandon us.  We are safe.  Protected.  Loved.

You make beautiful things out of dust

August 12, 2011

Let it rain.

The rain has brought relief and healing to my heart ache.  I’m reminded how connected we are to creation- all the world is crying out from the persistent heat.  How the sun shines unrelenting and scorching, sucking us dry and leaving us wasted.

My neglected garden, with earth so dry it was impossible to attack with a shovel, is finally moist enough to tend.  Almost all life is gone.  Weeds are everywhere.  Beauty is nearly impossible to find.

As in my heart.  Lonely.  Dried up.  Neglected. Forgotten.

For a long time I’ve asked, prayed for the Master Gardener to awaken the garden of my heart.

Life answered with a thunderclap, startling me to the core, lightening slicing me open, slapping me with a hurt I’ve never before experienced.  Oh my heart.  It’s taken a shaken, a beating, a sorrow to till the soil of my soul.  And my tears wet the ground, soaking, penetrating.   And as the morning arrives each day, in my wretchedness, He’s come.  He’s weeding, tilling, turning, digging deep and rescuing the tenderness from the strongholds.  His grace, His mercy, His love are replanting seeds of trust, honor, respect, love and forgiveness and His words are helping to kill the stubborn weeds, their gripping, strangling roots.

Perhaps sooner than expected Spring will arrive.  Perhaps this Spring the bitter roots will have been undone and freedom will reign and bear it’s fruits.  I’m laying down, day by day, at the foot of the Master my burden and asking expectantly for His joy to rain down on His beloved soul land.

Bring peace.  Bring Joy.

Love

I’ve been immersing myself in love. More specifically God’s love for creation and for me individually.  And when I’m in the valley I’m able to see His presence in more evident and profound ways.

Today, as I opened my daily reading from Jesus Calling, I was struck again by His perfect timing.

Let my LOVE seep into the inner recesses of your being.  Do not close off an part of yourself from Me.  I know you inside and out, so do not try to present a “cleaned up” self to Me.  Wounds that you shut away from the LIght of My Love will fester and become wormy.  Secret sins that you “hide” from Me can split off and develop lives of their own, controlling you without your realizing it.

Open yourself fully in My transforming Presence.  Let My brilliant Love-Light search out and destroy hidden fears.  This process requires time alone with Me, as My Love soaks into your innermost being.  Enjoy My perfect Love, which expels every trace of fear.

Psalms 139:1-4, 23-24; 1 John 4:18 (AMP)

I realize that the timing of reading this particularly meaningful passage may be purely coincidental, and there are several people I know who would reject any other explanation.  But to me, for me, this in not coincidental but the hand of God comforting me during this time of sadness.  He knew that one day, I would be compelled to buy this book and on July 28th, 2011 I would need these words, these love-filled, ministering words read and planted into my heart.

Thank you God for knowing me this well.  For planning my life, my days, my moments. Each day is ordained, is planned and You are there.  You know when I lie down and when I rise.  You never leave, only I become blind to the everyday gifts and treasures screaming of Your faithfulness.  The glimmer of goodness is seen when treading through the valley of shadows, the bright light of your love up ahead, reminding me constantly that I am not alone and need not fear.  You will not abandon me.  You call me beautiful.  You know my name.

Love.

One Foot in Sorrow

Someone said to me this week that we walk with one foot in sorrow and one foot in joy.  With joy comes sorrow.  And my life has been full of joy. But today, this moment, I feel sorrow.  Deep, abiding, wrenching, fist-clenching sorrow.

sor·row  /ˈsärō/

Noun: A feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune suffered by oneself or others.

And as I pour over this sinking sorrow, a song’s lyrics came on a breath and have been  ringing through the hollowed out part in my chest.

Healing is in Your Hands

by Christy Nockels

No mountain, no valley, no gain or loss we know

could keep us from Your love

No sickness, no secret, no chain is strong enough

to keep us from Your love

to keep us from Your love

How high, how wide

No matter where I am, healing is in Your hands

How deep, How strong,

And now by Your grace I stand, healing is in Your hands

Our present, our future, our past is in Your hands

We’re covered by Your blood

We’re covered by Your blood

How high, How wide

no matter where I am, healing is in Your hands

How deep, How strong

And now by Your grace I stand, healing is in Your hands

In all things, we know that.

We are more than conquerors.

You keep us by your love.

You keep us by your love.

No sickness.

No secret.

No chain is strong enough.

And sickness can be fatal.  Secrets can break our hearts.  Chains can keep us in bondage.

But God’s love.  Jesus’ sacrifice.  Divine intercession by the Spirit.  God is above me listening, Jesus carrying me, and the Spirit is groaning for my deep and gauging sorrow.  I stagger under the weight of brokenness.  I fall to my knees.  I beg without voice, without words, without thinking… I beg.

And God hears and knows and loves and loves and loves.  When my tears have run through my hands and washed my feet, God loves.  When my body heaves under the grief, God loves.  When the lies play to my heart, God loves and whispers, asking me not to believe.  And because He loves, I will conquer.  I will make it through this day.  He is keeping me by His love.  His love is deep and strong and wide and long and high.  And this is how, if we look, we can find the joy in the storm of suffering.  God as man came to earth and knows the pain of living in this world-

He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Isaiah 53:3 NIV

this world full of sin and stain.  The sins that lead to death.  Sin that silences reason and truth and conscience.  Sins that allow us to justify and believe we are ok.  Everyone is doing it.  No one will know.  And if anyone knows, will they care?

There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing to cause us to take a second look.
He was looked down on and passed over,
a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand.
One look at him and people turned away.
We looked down on him, thought he was scum.
But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—
our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.
We thought he brought it on himself,
that God was punishing him for his own failures.
But it was our sins that did that to him,
that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins!
He took the punishment, and that made us whole.
Through his bruises we get healed.
We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost.
We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way.
And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong,
on him, on him.   Isaiah 53:3-6  The Message

Jesus, carrier of our sins, lover of our souls.  Sweet, sweet Jesus knows the pain of heart ache, grief, loss, death.  He knows. He loves.  Man of sorrows, giver of life, healing, hope, joy.  In the darkness, I open my hands and call to You to take the next step with me.  Heal what’s broken, reconcile, reshape and make full and perfect.  Bring your glory and redeem this ugly mess.

Let my next step be joy.

Jesus Calling

July 15, 2011

Recently heard of a daily devotional book and found it on sale at Mardel this week. Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.  I flipped through it and landed on today’s reading… and it moved me.  It spoke to me right where I am.

“Do not worry about tomorrow!  This is not a suggestion, but a command.  I divided time into days and nights, so that you would have manageable portions of life to handle.  My grace is sufficient for you, but its sufficiency is for only on day at a time.  When you worry about the future, you heap day upon day of troubles onto your flimsy frame.  You stagger under this heavy load, which I never intended you to carry.

Throw off this oppressive burden with one quick thrust of trust.  Anxious thoughts meander about and crisscross in your brain, but trusting Me brings you directly into My Presence.  As you thus affirm your faith, shackles of worry fall off instantly.  Enjoy My Presence continually by trusting at all times.”

Matthew 6:34; 2 Corinthians 12:9; Psalms 62:8

So for now, I’m going to rest in this.  The command of NOT WORRYING.  I sometimes consider worrying as an act of unbelief.  That we are questioning God’s ability to save us, rescue us, heal us, protect us… that when times are difficult, maybe we need to take things into our own hands because God might not be capable of…. you fill in the blank.

And I know that for me, when I “take matters into my own hands” I am stressed, irritable, hurting, lonely, depressed, stripped of power and joy.

There is no peace.

There is no sanctuary.

My hands are empty for all the work and toil, strain and stress.

Again I’m reminded of how much better God’s ways are than my ways.  I labor in vain but for Him.  Why do I so often forget this?

I’m off to consider lilies and fields and birds of the air….
